Chapter 16

Lillian

We don’t linger longer than a night at the first outpost. By morning the snow has stopped and the sun is shining strong and bright in the sky. It’s another full day before we reach the next outpost, this one in similar condition to the first. Just like the last outpost, no one in particular is in charge. They’re all working together to do what they can to survive.

“The woman calls for a medic,” Drevath says shortly after we’ve unloaded the wagons. He grabs a bag and begins following her.

“I’d like to go along to help out, if I can.” Based on Drax’s expression, I’m convinced he’ll deny me, but I’m wrong.

“Stay close to Drevath.” Drax doesn’t let go of my hand, pulling me back to him like he can’t let me go. After a quick kiss, I hurry after Drevath.

He’s already inside a dark hut when I finally catch up to him. A small fire burns in the center of the room while a few people lie quietly on the surrounding beds. The air is stale and difficult to breathe. Drevath moves right to the first bed while I watch him hesitantly from the doorway.

“Come, Lillian,” he says. “I could use your assistance.”

“I don’t know how much help I can be.” My eyes dart around the room as I move closer to him, finally kneeling at his side. “Though I would suggest getting some fresh air in here.”

“Yes, do it. Sickness breeds in the heavy air.”

After pulling the main door open to let in the cold air, I move to the small window. After a few tries, I’m able to open it enough to let the air move through the small space. While Drevath remains at the first bed, I move around the room, making sure the rest of the sick have enough blankets to keep them warm.

“Lillian.” At the sound of Drevath’s voice, I hurry back to his side. “I am not sure what they suffer from but their bodies burn with fever. Tell Drax no one else must enter this hut so we can keep whatever it is contained. It would also be best for you to keep your distance.”

“I have an excellent immune system, Drevath. I’m not worried about getting sick.”

“We don’t know how your body would react to such foreign illness.”

He has a point but I’m desperate to make myself useful while on this trip. My only job can’t be getting pregnant, no matter how much I enjoy the time with Drax. “At least let me brew something to help with the fever. You can come get it from the fire if you wish.”

Drevath thinks longer than I’d like, but eventually he gives in. With renewed purpose, I hurry from the hut to see what I can scrounge up for remedies.

“What is it?” Drax asks when I approach him again.

“Drevath isn’t sure aside from the fever. I’m going to brew something that should help strengthen their immune systems and hydrate them.

“Their bodies are weak from the cold, and lack of food,” Drax says.
